Know a Business Owner Who Deserves Better Advice?

The Value of an Accountant Who Really Knows Your Business.

For 60 years, GCOL has worked alongside business owners, families and investors through growth, change and major financial decisions.

Our approach is simple:

Experienced accountants who know your business, give you straight answers, and help you make better decisions.

That philosophy has helped us build long-term client relationships—and many of our best new clients come to us through referrals from people who already know and trust the way we work.

Who is a good fit for GCOL?

We are not trying to be the right accountant for every business.

Our best relationships are usually with established, owner-managed businesses and families who value experience, accessibility and practical advice.

They may be:

  • running an established and profitable business
  • managing a family-owned company
  • dealing with several shareholders or family members
  • bringing the next generation into the business
  • considering an acquisition, sale or restructure
  • planning for succession or retirement
  • balancing business interests with property and investments
  • facing a significant financial or strategic decision
  • looking for an accountant who understands more than just their annual accounts

Often, they are successful business owners who have simply reached the point where they need more from their accountant.

Sometimes the accountant isn't the problem—the relationship is

We regularly hear from business owners who are technically receiving the services they need, but something is missing. Their accounts are completed. Their tax returns are filed. Their compliance obligations are met. But when they have an important question, they struggle to get someone on the phone. They may feel their accountant doesn't really understand the business anymore—or that conversations only happen once a year when the accounts are being prepared. For an established business, that's often not enough. Good accounting should help business owners look forward, not simply report on what has already happened.

At GCOL, we believe your accountant should understand your business, know the background and be available when an important decision needs to be made.

Experience matters when the answer isn't obvious

GCOL's roots in the Hutt Valley date back to 1966.

Over six decades, we have worked with businesses through economic cycles, ownership changes, growth, restructuring, property decisions, succession and generational change.

That experience continues under Director Tony Gambitsis FCA, who became a Chartered Accountant in 1986 and marks 40 years as a Chartered Accountant in 2026.

In 2024, Tony was elevated to Fellow Chartered Accountant, recognising his experience, leadership and contribution to the accounting profession. Those milestones are important to us—but their real value is what they mean for our clients. Experience gives perspective. When you have seen businesses through different stages and different challenges, you learn that the right answer is not always the most obvious one. Good advice requires technical knowledge, certainly, but it also requires judgement, commercial understanding and an appreciation of the people behind the numbers.

More than annual accounts

We still believe strongly in getting the fundamentals right. Tax, financial reporting and compliance matter. But for many of our clients, the most valuable conversations happen outside the annual accounting cycle.

They are questions such as:

  • Should we buy this business?
  • Can we afford to buy this property?
  • Should we bring our children into the company?
  • How should we structure the ownership?
  • Is it time to sell?
  • How do we get the business ready for succession?
  • Are we actually making enough money?
  • What should we be doing differently?

These are rarely questions that can be answered by software alone. They require an adviser who understands the numbers, knows the business and is prepared to give a clear view.

Straight answers matter

Business owners already have enough complexity to deal with. Accounting advice should make decisions clearer—not make them more complicated. We aim to explain things in plain language, talk through the options and give our clients a practical recommendation. Sometimes that means confirming that a client is heading in the right direction. Sometimes it means raising a concern they may not have considered. And sometimes it means saying, quite simply, "We wouldn't do that." Our clients value knowing that they can pick up the phone, talk to someone who understands their circumstances and receive an answer they can act on.

Relationships still matter

Technology has transformed accounting, and GCOL has continued to evolve with it. But one thing has not changed since the firm's beginnings in 1966: good advice starts with a good relationship.

The better we know our clients, the better advice we can give them. We want to understand where the business has come from, where the owners want it to go, what is happening within the family, what other investments are involved and what success ultimately looks like. That understanding becomes particularly valuable when circumstances change or a major opportunity arises.

There is no need to start every conversation from the beginning. We already know the story.

Do you know someone who could benefit from a different kind of accounting relationship?

Most business owners know other business owners. You may have a customer, supplier, colleague, friend or family member who runs a good business but is frustrated with the advice they are currently receiving. Perhaps their accountant is difficult to reach. Perhaps the relationship has become transactional. Perhaps the business has grown and become more complicated. Or perhaps they are approaching an important decision and would value a fresh perspective from someone with substantial experience.

If someone comes to mind, we would be very happy to have an initial conversation with them.

There is no hard sell.

We simply want to understand their circumstances, what they are looking for and whether GCOL might be the right fit. And if we aren't, we will say so.

The right accountant should know more than your numbers

For the right clients, accounting is not a commodity.

It is a long-term professional relationship built on trust, understanding and good judgement.

That's the type of relationship we have been building at GCOL since 1966.

Experienced accountants who know your business, give you straight answers, and help you make better decisions.

If you know a business owner who would value that kind of relationship, we'd be pleased to meet them.
